The Science Museum (Museu de la Ciència), known since 2004 as CosmoCaixa, is Barcelona's hands-on science museum, run by the "la Caixa" foundation. Its exhibits explain nature by letting visitors touch, try and see.
The highlight is the Flooded Forest, a slice of Amazon rainforest under glass, with its wet and dry zones and more than a hundred living species, from fish to birds. Its tall ceiba trees were cast from molds made in Brazil.
Then there is the Geological Wall, huge cuts of real rock, mostly from Catalonia, that show erosion, volcanoes and faults, and the Universe Hall, the main space, which runs from the Big Bang to robotics. Younger children have rooms of their own and a small planetarium.
The building began as an asylum for the blind, built between 1904 and 1909. The renovation kept the old facade and made the museum about four times larger; a spiral ramp, with an Amazonian tree at its center, links the basement to the fifth floor.
