At the southwestern end of Passeig del Born stands Santa Maria del Mar, one of Barcelona’s finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. This beautiful church was built in 1329 by master architects Berenguer de Montagut and Ramon Despuig and is admired for its architectural harmony and simplicity. One of its most remarkable features is the fact that its construction was aided by parishioners, particularly the stevedores from the nearby port, who devoted their own time and effort to building the church.
