Description

The finest example of Romanesque architecture in Barcelona is found in the dainty little cloister at the Church of Santa Maria del Pi. This church's history dates back to either the 9th or 10th century, and was later rebuilt in the 11th or 12th century. It is of particular importance due to the 13th-century polylobulated arches that rest atop intricately carved capitals, which are unique in Europe. Inside the church is the tombstone of Guifré II, son of Guifré El Pelós, the 9th-century count thought to have been the founder of Catalonia.
