Description
The Jardí Botànic, Barcelona's botanical garden, covers 14 hectares of steep hillside on Montjuïc, between the Olympic Stadium, the castle and the cemetery. It is devoted to plants from the world's regions with a Mediterranean climate.
The garden is laid out by geography. Past the Canary Islands section at the entrance, paths wind through the flora of the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, California, Chile, South Africa and Australia, plants grouped as they would grow together in the wild.
The slope faces northwest like an amphitheater, between about 100 and 140 meters above the sea, so the walk also has wide views over the Llobregat delta and the Olympic Ring, with the hills of Collserola and Garraf behind.
Opened in 1999, the garden was designed by the architects Carles Ferrater and Josep Lluís Canosa with the landscape architect Bet Figueras. The land had a rougher past: first a shantytown called Can Valero, then a waste dump.
