A multidisciplinary centre for art, science, thought and communication
Recently remodeled, Centre d'Art Santa Mònica (Contemporary Art Museum) reopened in March 2009 with 'Architecture Without Place'. Other plans include reactivating Vilajoana's neon sculpture of the Cheshire Cat's grin across the façade and turning Drassanes metro station into an exhibition space.
In a controversial move, the Generalitat appointed new director Vicenç Altaió to pump up the lackluster visitor numbers for this contemporary art space. Altaió took his position in January 2009 and has vowed to create 'a multidisciplinary centre for art, science, thought and communication', although detractors fear that the governmental hijacking of the management will mean diluted programming.
