Barcelona Zoo is home to 2000 animals, including geckos, gorillas, lions, elephants, and Iberian wolves, offering pony rides, picnic areas, and an adventure playground. In 2019, Barcelona authorities implemented regulations prohibiting the breeding of animals unless they can be released into their natural habitat. As a result, many of the zoo's animals are expected to be transferred to nature reserves. There have been plans since 2016 to release the zoo's dolphins into semi-liberty, however, this has yet to happen (one of the four dolphins died in 2019).
